Starting a Lady Jane’s Salon of your own
Are you interested in hosting a Lady Jane’s Satellite Salon in your hometown? Due to popular demand, the New York City Salon’s co-founders have schemed and plotted to incorporate all lovers of romance reading under the banner of Lady Jane’s. Here’s how it works:
- Get a group together. Trust us, you can’t run a salon on your own.
- Get in touch with us—we’ll give you some information on how to get it all rolling, from finding the right spot, starting a Google doc, and booking authors.
- Join us on the blog! We’ll set it up so that, say, the organizer(s) of Lady Jane Chicago can submit a post about upcoming speakers, guest blog, or post salon videos.
- Last but not least, Lady Jane’s is about sharing a love of romance fiction. One way we do that is by charging a modest admission fee of five dollars OR one gently used romance novel. Net proceeds at the year’s end support a local charity, preferably one that assists women and in some way promotes literacy.
By signing on to host a Lady Jane’s Satellite Salon of your own, we ask that you agree to:
- Use the Lady Jane’s Salon name *only* in conjunction with the name of your city/town/locale e.g., Lady Jane’s Salon–Denver. This avoids confusion for us all, including publishers and media outlets.
- Donate all admission books to a charity 501c3 that supports women. Town libraries are fine; your personal library is not.
- Direct admission dollars to 1) supporting the salon’s operational costs e.g., venue rental if applicable/staff gratuities, web site admin, and 2) a designated charitable organization. The money isn’t yours to spend, so don’t spend it on you.
- Invite authors! From big names to newbie’s, or historical to paranormal, all authors are welcome so long as their work fits within the broad category of romance fiction.
- Invite book lovers! Lady Jane’s is for everyone who appreciates the pleasure of a good romance story, so don’t forget local librarians, publishing industry professionals, and local reporters. Hint: The latter are always on the look-out for romance related stories for February.
Once you sign on to the above stipulations, we’ll gladly provide you with a presence on our website as an official Lady Jane’s Salon satellite. Welcome to the salon!
Best wishes,
The Lady Jane Salon Team:
Hope Tarr, Leanna Renee Hieber, Maya Rodale and Ron Hogan.

Idea is really interesting. Do you , however, feature any other readings beside besides romance novels?
Thanks for reply.
Hi Dee:
Lady Jane’s Salon was launched in February 2009 to fill a void in the New York City book scene: romance fiction. There are already great venues and reading series for many other genres as well as literary and mainstream commercial fiction. We do occasionally have guest emcees who write in other areas, including nonfiction, provided there is some reasonable romantic tie-in. To whit, we will have Andrew Shaffer, author of GREAT PHILOSOPHERS WHO FAILED AT LOVE, as our guest emcee for February ’11 and Elizabeth Kerri Mahon, author of SCANDALOUS WOMEN (short title) as our guest emcee for March ’11.
We hope to see you there.
